The Key issues

Community Engagement

Team Leyton aims to communicate openly with local residents and stakeholders, explaining our mission, celebrating our successes, being realistic about the challenges and listening to local people.

More specifically, we aim to:

  • Increase awareness of Team Leyton among service providers and local residents and build our profile, especially in the media
  • Reinforce the proposition that Leyton is a safe place in which to live, work and visit
  • Increase residents' participation in our work, especially from young people, Black, Asian and minority ethnic communities and traditionally 'hard to reach' communities
  • Promote and sustain community cohesion through the celebration of diversity
  • Ensure residents are involved and consulted on the regeneration of Leyton and issues that affect them
  • Build effective working relationships with voluntary and community organisations and faith groups

So how will we do it?

  • word of mouth - eg Community Champions, Worknet outreach officer, street wardens
  • building relationships and networks - eg community engagement working group, LBWF Tactical Joint Action Group, Safer Neighbourhoods Team ward panel, Community Council, councillors
  • face to face - door knocking, focus groups
  • networking events - tea dances, jobfairs, festivals, Our Area Matters
  • printed & multimedia - eg our magazine Leyton Today, promotional merchandise, Streetlife radio station, our website

What resources do we have?

  • Community Champions
  • Board members
  • a dedicated Community Engagement Co-ordinator
  • a dedicated Community Engagement budget
  • support from Waltham Forest's Communications team, Better Neighbourhoods Initiative, Neighbourhood Renewal Advisors, Neighbourhood Management Network, Government Office for London and Department of Communities and Local Government.

How well are we doing?

  • We know that between 2004 and 2007 awareness of Team Leyton amongst households in Leyton rose from 44% to 89% of those interviewed. We will be looking for improved satisfaction in services across Leyton over the lifetime of the pathfinder, to 2012
